Corsica is the first foal I bred myself. Of course since my stallions were out performing at shows I had to find an outside stallion to breed to. I thought about Tracey Wiess's stallion Maestoso Contessa, an import from Piber, the stud farm of the Spanish Riding school. I had always admired the temperment of Maestoso Contessa and had gone to see him many times at Tracey's beautiful place in Lorane, Oregon. Maestoso Contessa is also a very beautiful stallion and is doing upper level dressage work so I thought he would be a good choice. Also Maestoso Contessa has bloodlines which are not in any of my horses so Corsica will bring those bloodlines to my foals someday when he is a breeding stallion himself. (Many years away!) Corsica has been a sweet and loving colt from day one. He is very mild and willing. I had no foal for him to grow up with so I put him out with Siegfried my 28 year old gelding who loves foals and became enormously attached to him. I followed the example of other Lipizzan breeders who do not isolate their young stallions. It is much more healthy for them to grow up with other horses. I find that until age three it is fine to keep the young studs with geldings. The spring they turn three they might get too rough in their play and have to be separated. I would prefer to start Lipizzans at four years of age. But it depends on the horse.
